This is a site about yoga, life, food, travel, and fun…

If you are new to my blog, I will just start off by saying that by some miracle,  My son and I are spending three months in the Azores. This is my first time leaving the United States (aside from Mexico and Canada). My mother is Portuguese and grew up here on the islands. She met my Dad, an American who was stationed on a military base on the island of Terceira, they fell in love, got married and moved to the United States. My whole life, I heard stories of these little islands, and now after many years of wondering, I am finally here. It is magical.

After a very long day (and night) of traveling, we finally made it to the island of Sao Miguel. We are staying in Ponta Delgada, the biggest city in the entire 9 island archipelago. The city is old and beautiful. It really doesn’t even seem like a city, it is more like a village-an old village with cobblestone roads. I love it. I am amazed to be here. My entire life, I have dreamed of coming to the Azores.  We will be here for a couple of days, and then we will go to the island of Santa Maria, where we will be living for the next few months..so for now, here are a few pictures of Ponta Delgada.  Enjoy. There are more to come… but we gotta go eat amazing portuguese sweet bread (goodbye Gluten Free food!!).

Hooray for miracles! ~T

Beautiful. The Steam on the left is from volcano.

Nearly a year ago, I found a teacher,  Geshe Tenzing Tamding, that I really resonate with. He is a Tibetan Buddhist Lama, and truly a magical, beautiful being. There is so much light and peace and love in his being, you sit near him and are instantly transformed. He has the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. He laughs all the time too. His laugh is so loud and wonderful, and very contagious.

Laughter and love are contagious!!!

I was able to spend a lot of time with him. Lunches, dinners, lessons, and even an air boat ride through the Everglades. When we went to the Everglades, Geshela changed out of his traditional robes, and wore, “normal” clothes, and even a baseball hat. I remember the shock I felt, when I saw him ”whoa, he looks like a normal person!!” I sat next to him on the boat, smiling almost nonstop, I felt like I knew this amazing secret: There are wise beings, sometimes in disguise, that are sent to guide us.

Everglades Group Photo… Geshela Blending in….

Well, last night, I got to hang out with another Tibetan Buddhist Lama. Nyari Tritul Rinpoche. He is from India, but lives mostly in Spain. He has studied with, and is friends with my teacher.  He and I are the same age. And both born the year of the Snake (my teacher  is also year of the Snake).   We are the same age, but in terms of wisdom, he is lifetimes ahead of me. When Rinpoche was 3 years old, he was formally recognized as the Third reincarnation of the 89th Ganden Tripa. Ganden Tripa is the title of the appointed spiritual leader for Tibetan school of Buddhism. He has been formally studying Buddhism since he was 5 years old. He is very wise.  He has so much love in his eyes and peace in his heart.

Hanging out with Tritul Rinpoche… and other wise beings..:)

We really just hung out, as friends, and talked story. I told him that sometimes I feel wise and kind, and full of trust. But then at other times I feel critical, judgemental, and confused. He assured me that this was very normal, and he had a simple but powerful message: Love and Compassion.  As we develop more love and compassion, we radiate more love and compassion, and it spreads. Together we grow. He reminded me that “We are all the Buddha, it is in all of us, we just have to remember.”

I asked him about spirits and other beings. I have seen spirits before, and I wanted to know what he thought. He told us that “Yes,  there are other beings, spirits, angels, dark entities, but not everyone can see them.” More often people feel them. He then explained that in Buddhist thought, there are 6 realms of existence.  He said some of us can see glimpses into other realms…

Rinpoche gave us protection bracelets, a Buddhist Heart Mantra and blessing,  his email address, and Skype contact. He said “we must take advantage of this technology, it is here to help us grow.”  Anyways, I feel like this hang out session came at the perfect time. It seems like whenever doubt begins to take over my thoughts, I spend time with someone who helps remind me of my true path and purpose. There are wise beings among us sent to guide us, to teach us, and help us grow. I love my Buddhist Sangha (family)!

Have a blessed day.

Love and Compassion. ~T

We have made it to Sarasota Florida. We are visiting my sister and her family (they moved to Florida from Hawaii a few years ago too). My sister has been talking to me for months about her love of Aerial Yoga, and last night, I finally tried it. It was very different from any yoga I have ever done, but definitely fun. And hard. We took a class at Reflex Arts in Sarasota.  The teacher Kerry Tice, is both a yoga teacher and a circus performer.

That’s me doing a Hip opener… Aerial Yoga Style

At first I was a little unsure of the class. I was nervous that I might fall, and clumsy with the hammock. But the teacher was very knowledgable and helpful. Not only did I start to feel like an acrobat, but, I was able to stay in inversions for a very long time. Hooray for (nearly) weightless inversions!!  We did an amazing series of poses where we  flipped both legs in the air and then floated one leg around to the ground.. I loved it. Aerial yoga clearly requires strength, and my core definitely was worked.  My arms are sore too.It was a good workout, an awesome experience, and a reminder to always try new things. I left class feeling like I could someday run away with the circus. Yeah!

Floating in Anjali Mudra

Aerial Yoga/ Fun in Cobbler Pose

Speaking of yoga, I also took a class at Rosemary Court Yoga in downtown Sarasota.I took a Hatha Flow class with Venessa. I really enjoyed it. Her pace was good. Her asanas connected nicely. It was a good strong practice, but not too hard. It truly was a multi-level class. I like the studio a lot. I will definitely go back. :) (The Aerial yoga teacher teaches Vinyasa classes there too).  If you are in Sarasota, you should check out both Reflex Arts and Rosemary Court! Whether flying or floating, Sarasota has some good yoga classes.

Peace.

I love sweets. Love them. Give me a healthy sweet treat, and I am happy.  So while in Tampa, visiting my friend Lisa, I made some Raw Fig Bars. They turned out so good.. I decided I should share the idea.  Healthy food tastes so good!

Lisa and Me and her beautiful Food processor! Digging the Figs..

In order to make these bars, you will need a food processor. Food processors are awesome. I love to experiment and create good food. I am like a mad scientist. Muahahaha… I have made some not-so-delicious experiments too, like Glop–even the dog wouldn’t eat that! Ha!

Usually, I combine the right ingredients and come up with a hit, like these awesome fig bars.

Figs+Friends=Fun

Raw Fig Bars

Ingredients:

 20 dried Figs

1/2 cup Raisins

1/4 cup Raw Cashews

3/4 cup Raw Walnuts

1/2 cup Shredded (unsweetened) coconut

2 tablespoons of Chia Seeds

1 tablespoon Honey (or to taste)

3 Tablespoons water (add more if needed-Water can help prevent the mixture from being too thick)

Puree all ingredients in the Food processor (adjust the recipe to taste), spread mixture  on a cookie sheet, and allow to chill for three hours.

Raw Fig Bar Mixture

Spread the Mixture and Chill

Full of protein, fiber, vitamins, omega 3′s,  and minerals… MMMMM…feel good about food!

Fig bars are soo good they’ll make you wanna dance!

There is a place about an hour north of Tampa Florida, where  alligators, manatees, and turtles live. Mermaids live there too. And, for my son’s thirteenth birthday (he is also a Gemini), we gathered up our crew,  dressed in our wackiest clothes and headed to Weeki Wachee State park.

The Wacky Birthday Crew

Me and my teenage son!!!

Three Amigos

I was really impressed with the park. First of all, it really is a wacky place. They have live  mermaid shows. We were lucky enough to see the Little Mermaid, which is performed two or three times a day. It was really entertaining and definitely unlike anything I have ever seen. .

Mr. Turtle-friend to all the mermaids (he was my favorite)

There is also a water park (my favorite ride was called the Pirates Revenge), a guided river boat cruise, nature trails, and kayaking. We spent the day there, had a picnic, and swam for hours in the springs.  An added bonus..  park admission is really affordable and everything is included.. :)

The Birthday Boy on the Boat

The 25 minute boat ride was beautiful

Water is Calm… closing time

We ended up staying until the park closed. So we had to have our singing and gluten-free cupcakes in the parking lot. It was a great day shared with my sister, my brother-in-law, my niece and nephew, my best friend Lisa and her awesome son Txanton (all of us moved from Hawaii to Florida at different times for different reasons, weird I know). Thanks to everyone for the Birthday magic….Happy Birthday Keone!!!! Woohoo! I love you!

Go get wacky!

I love teaching yoga. Over the past three years, I taught yoga 6 days a week. Sometimes I taught as many as 12 classes a week. But about three weeks ago,  I said a tearful goodbye to all of my students and began my gypsy travels. I am having a great time. I am maintaining my own practice, but, I miss my students. I miss my classes. I miss teaching. It truly is my calling.

My Lake Worth Yoga crew….I Love you!! (I am the one standing under the orb)

Luckily, I had the opportunity to guest teach last weekend. My friend from Siembra Farms, is also a yoga teacher, and a fellow Gemini, and she arranged for me to guest teach at a beautiful and Historic Bed and Breakfast called the Herlong Mansion, in Micanopy Florida.  I had a good-sized class, with strong students.  In honor of the sun in Gemini, the class I taught was called The Gemini Flow. It felt so good to teach. It felt perfect. I love teaching yoga.

We have left the farm and are in Tampa now. When I think of Tampa, paradise does not come to mind. To me Tampa Florida is all the things I don’t like, wrapped up in one big  weird city.  But, it is part of the friend tour/gypsy travels. My good friend Lisa, who I met 9 years ago in HAWAII, moved to Tampa. You might be wondering, How did they both end up in Florida???   Well, my friend, that would be a book. A long and complicated book filled with happy moments and deep, deep wounds. I will write it someday….but not today.

So I don’t love life in the city, but I do love my friend. Our kids are best friends.  They were in kindergarten together, back in Hawaii. The kids are having a great time catching up, and my friend and I have been able to take some yoga classes.  But, I miss teaching!!!! A lot.

I know this desperate longing to teach is good for me. Taking a variety of yoga classes is good. Some classes I have enjoyed, while others I have felt critical of (confession, I am sorry).  Luckily,I  found a class on Youtube that i really enjoy. It is called The Detox Flow with Clara Roberts-Oss. I am even doing my own flow that is on YouTube. It is short, so  I do it two or three times through.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pj_9msaLa8&hd=1

Anyways, I know someday soon I will be teaching again. Always a teacher. Always a student. And in two weeks we will be living in the Azores.. doing yoga, eating grapes, and connecting with my relatives and my ancestral home .

I am sending lots of love to my yogi and yogini friends.

I grew up in Olympia, in the 90′s. Olympia was home to amazing music, K records, the Riot Grrl movement, and all things punk rock. That was my scene… I had attitude, played drums in a crappy band, drank way too much, went to shows and parties almost everyday, and had a shaved head. Cute. (Not really). I moved away long ago, but still keep in touch with some old friends. One of them is my good friend Tinsel. We were teenagers when we met, and we instantly became friends. He was in a punk band called The Rickets.. and i used to travel around with them in their punk van. I remember one year they played a show at the Capital Theatre on my birthday… they sung (or screamed) me a Birthday song, “Happy Birthday you bastard, let’s go get plastered!!!” Seriously. That was long ago. Seems like a different life. And in a way, it was.

Well, a few months ago, I got a call from Tinsel, he was moving to St. Augustine Florida. Whoa. How random. And awesome. Anyways, we went to visit him… and the Old City.

St Augustine is the oldest city in North America. First colonized by Spain in the 1500′s, it is city full of history and full of ghosts.

St Augustine is haunted.  I have always loved old buildings and old cemeteries. It is like I can feel memories.  I could walk around that city all day…. and never get bored.

Walking with the ghosts

Downtown St. Augustine is charming, the roads are narrow. The buildings are old.

Resting by the fire…..

St. Augustine by night… love it!

Haunted cemetary

The Tourist part of town

The Lightner Museum… (highly recommend)

Late night walks… train tracks and graveyards

Old graveyard in the woods…. spooky.

Storming the Fort

Night at the old Fort

Old roofless house in the woods

The beach is beautiful too….

St. Augustine Farmers Market… good food, good music, lots of trees. Saturdays. Anastasia Island

Hungry? Have some RAW dessert at the Present Moment Cafe….mmmmm..(added bonus: they get their veggies from the farm we were just staying on!)

My friend lives on the outskirts of town, in a charming old house surrounded by woods and three old graveyards. He has more dead neighbors than living ones. We spent a week exploring and catching up.  There was so much to see and do! We had a great time. I am excited to come back for another visit.

Thanks to all the spirits and thanks to Tinsel for the fun.

The Gypsy….and the Elf

Until next time. xo~T

June 6th, the day of the Venus transit, was also my 35th birthday. (I can’t believe I am 35! How did that happen so quickly??)

Diving into my 35th year. Blue Hole Springs

Usually my birthday is pretty low-key, with a little bit of cake, a couple of friends, and a card from my son.  But this year, we had a real celebration.   Still on the farm (which is full of fellow Gemini’s),  I woke up in the morning, enjoyed a cup of coffee, did a little yoga, and then went out to the field to harvest vegetables for CSA day.

Picking Tomatoes with Jungle Boy

I harvested tomatoes, squash, green beans, and eggplant. My friends were all working in the field, the kids were all playing, the dogs were smiling and dirty. Everything felt perfect. Especially the warm rain. We finished our farm work pretty quickly. And then we had raw chocolate almond butter cake and I was given one of my birthday presents….. Nature Earrings. Best gift ever. Everyone had made me a pair of earrings. So now I have the best earring collection in the world. So stylish.

Nature Earrings…

Being my birthday, It was up to me to decide what we were going to do. I don’t like to be the one who decides things…but I knew I wanted to be in the woods and I knew I wanted to swim in a spring.  So we packed up a picnic and went to Ichetucknee Springs State Park. Florida is known for its beaches, but these  fresh water springs are a real treasure. At a constant 72 degrees, the springs are chilly and refreshing. Paradise with ice.

Beautiful Florida Springs

It had been raining, so we had the park to ourselves. Which made it even better. Two hawks flew down and perched near me and wished me a happy birthday. We had a fun picnic and drank a gallon of kombucha.

Cold Water Heaven

After our day at the springs, we went and had my favorite treat. Bubble Tea.

So cool

It was a beautiful day with beautiful friends. Yeah! This is already a great year! ~T

Birthday Love

We made it to the farm. Siembra Farm in Gainesville Florida. We are camping, working, and visiting our friends who own and run an organic farm. I am in awe. FRESH FOOD! There are trees everywhere. Friends everywhere. Blueberries everywhere. Vegetables everywhere. There are ticks everywhere too. Yesterday while exploring in some thick woods, the ticks really got me. I pulled out about ten.Yuck!! Ticks  love climbing up my pants and burrowing in my inner thighs.. Welcome to summer in Florida… Bugs galore!

BEAUTIFUL GARDEN

Siembra means to sow, to plant, to grow. And I am amazed. This organic family run farm produces so much food.  On our first day here, we helped gather and wash the CSA shares.

Fun with Leafy Greens

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.

Gathering bunches of Kale

With a CSA, people pay a very reasonable amount for a weekly boxes of veggies. Whatever grows, is what goes in the box.  Fresh, delicious, organic produce. I honestly have never seen a better CSA.

Me working in the Herb Garden… (The sweet baby lives on the farm)… what a good life. :)

This week people got tons of greens, different types of kale, collards, arugula, eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, peppers, basil, herbs, and more. If you live near Gainesville, you should support Siembra farms. Wherever you live, you should find out about CSA’s- Food Revolution!

Cody at the Gainesville Farmers Market…

The Siembra farm folks are the nicest people I know. They help make the world a better place.  ( they have good dance moves too! )

Everyone loves the Farm!

This whole experience is a pretty incredible home school/life  lesson. We are learning to farm and camping out in a magical paradise.

Home Sweet Home

The kids are having a great time. They run around all day…exploring the farm, the woods, and the creek.

Farm kids…. Happy and covered in dirt

The dogs are having a great time.

Country Dogs

We are all having a great time…working, eating, and exploring.

HAVE YOU HUGGED A FARMER TODAY??

Covered in dirt, I feel blessed. ~T

I have a soft spot for the injured, the lonely, the scared, the unloved. So bring  a cute, scared, starving, shaking, feral kitten to my house and I cannot say no. People know this and show up at my door.  Knock knock knock…. I open the door. My good friend is standing at porch holding a little furry thing. “Hi Tiff, please help!! Our dog was just about to eat this feral kitten, we can’t find it’s mom, and the shelter won’t take him.” My son’s eyes sparkled. He smiled ear to ear. He has been asking for a kitten for months. I know he manifested this one into our family. . What could i say???

Meow

Our family just grew. Dog, kitten, chicken, mom and kid. My dog is huge. 75 pounds of sweet clumsy love. She is very friendly. She hangs out with the chicken, they lay in the sun together.  In fact, we fostered another kitten, about a year ago and our dog let the kitten nurse.

Our dog, letting our old foster kitty nurse.. (no milk) ha!

I am super grateful for our awesome family.

Seriously, this kitten is so cute. I love him already. I keep trying to remind myself, love without attachment. Honor the time we have. But it is hard. I don’t want the kitten to feel abandoned. We are leaving on our trip in just a couple of days!!!!!

My dog is going with us to the farm, she is big and can handle her own, but the kitten, well the kitten will have to stay. There are lots of coyotes that like to eat little kittens where we are going, and there is no “inside” to keep her. We will be living in a little tent. Totally off the grid. My kind of living. :)

Luckily, my friend, the Animal Witch, has agreed to watch our cute little kitty. We are trying to get him used to birds… birds are friends. not food.

Our kitten hanging out with an Ecectus Parrot

Love comes when we least expect it.

I have been so busy, working, packing, studying portuguese,  and spending time with my good friends. And right after the kitten arrived, we had some serious neighborhood crime. so we packed up the family and stayed at a friend’s house for a week. I know I have neglected my blog. But, stay tuned. This is about to become a traveling yogini blog. First stop St. Augustine.

I will be posting again soon.  Happy Saturday. ~tiff
